WALKING/RUNNING/HIKING & WHY NOT BIKING TOO!? ALL PHYSICAL EXERCISE SUPPORTS YOUR WELL-BEING!

So full disclosure, running is 100%, not my thing! Fortunately, hiking, walking, and running all offer several benefits, so getting up and moving this way is always worth it. And just in case you need a reminder or refresher, when you participate in these things, you can anticipate: improved cardiovascular health, increased endurance and strength, reduced risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, improved mood and mental health, weight loss, and weight management, boosted immune system, lowered blood pressure and cholesterol levels, increased bone density and reduced risk of osteoporosis, enhanced cognitive function and memory, and the opportunity for socialization and exploration of nature; both of which contribute to mental health! Holy cow, just typing that makes me want to get out on the trails right now!

HERE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE RESOURCES TO GET OUT ON THE PATH/TRAIL:

  1. ALLTRAILS: My family uses this map whenever we’re in a new area and even at home to find great trails. Also, a website, AllTrails, provides trail maps, reviews, and photos from their community. This is an excellent resource for all, with free and subscription options!

  2. REI: I love REI! I have been a co-op member with them for decades, and they always have just what I am looking for!

  3. SPOTIFY: Choose a playlist specifically for running and hiking, or make your own!

  4. STRAVA: Strava is a social network for athletes that allows you to record and track your workouts, connect with other athletes, and compete in challenges. As a non-runner and biker, I have not used this app as frequently, but my family members who use it LOVE it!

  5. OUTDOOR VOICES: Another favorite for active wear! I also love their mission of supporting people in getting outside and having FUN, all in comfy and lasting clothes.

  6. TRAILFORKS: My mountain biking buddies swear by this app, complete with trail maps, photos, and reviews from its global community of riders.

  7. NATIONALPARKSSERIVCE: I love exploring the National Parks Service Page for inspiration to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty! Their Instagram is also always good for beauty and a laugh!

  8. LOCAL RUNNING CLUBS AND OUTDOOR STORES I have a good friend who is an avid runner and moves a lot for work. Her number one tip to get outside in your new community is to connect with a local running/hiking club. It’s a great way to build new social connections and learn about the neighborhood you are in.

  9. BOOKS TO EXPLORE: Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, Wild by Cheryl Strayed, Walk With Me: New York by Susan Kaufman, Bike Snob: Systematically and Mercilessly Realigning the World of Cycling by Eben Weiss, A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
